Homeowner Deed Scams
The Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs warns county residents not to fall for deed scams.
Homeowners have reported receiving official-looking letters from “Local Records Office” that give them a deadline for requesting “a copy of the only document” that identifies homeowners as property owners.
The mailer instructs homeowners to pay $89.
But homeowners can get a copy of their deed FREE from Cuyahoga County’s Fiscal Department.
To get a free copy of your deed online, visit http://fiscalofficer.cuyahogacounty.us/
and click on “Recorded Documents.”
If you need help printing the document out, visit your local library or the county Fiscal Department’s Transfer and Recording Division, Room 4-100, 2079 E. 9th St., Cleveland.
Should a homeowner need a certified copy of a deed, those are available from Transfer and Recording for $2 per page. The average deed is two to three pages long.
Local Records Office, the company sending out the solicitation, uses a return address that is actually a UPS store in Columbus.
Although the solicitation contains disclaimers that it is not affiliated with the government, Consumer Affairs is concerned the bogus deadline on the letter will cause consumers to overlook the disclaimers and pay an exorbitant amount for information publicly available at little or no cost.
